Private Round Table :
HER MAJESTY QUEEN SILVIA OF SWEDEN PARTICIPATED TO A ROUND-TABLE ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN MONTREAL

After the International Conference Violence Against Women: Diversifying Social Responses, organized by the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Family Violence and Violence Against Women (CRI-VIFF), Queen Silvia of Sweden, very concerned by this matter, participated in Montreal, last October 25th, to a round-table discussion on this subject as an integral part of the official programme for Her Majesty's State visit to Quebec and Canada.

This event, organized by Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, in collaboration with the Government of Quebec and the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Family Violence and Violence Against Women (CRI-VIFF), provided the opportunity to discuss the respective approaches by experts on the subject, here and in Sweden, the goal of which is to reduce and ultimately eliminate violence against women and to improve women conditions around the world.

The experts invited to paticipate to this round-table are members of CRI VIFF, of other organizations working on this matter, as well as specialists from Sweden and from the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada.

The International Conference Violence Against Women: Diversifying Social Responses, held in Montreal from October 22nd to 24th, 2006, brought together researchers, practitioners, policy makers and students from different disciplines coming from forty countries. Close to two hundred presentations dealt with the following topics: Violence against women in different social contexts and living conditions; Social responses to violence against women; Major debates and issues regarding the social responses that have been developed in different countries to address violence against women.

The Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Family Violence and Violence Against Women (CRI-VIFF) groups researchers mainly from Université de Montréal and Université Laval, as well as the Association québécoise d’établissements de santé et de services sociaux (AQESSS, the Quebec association of health and social services organizations), and Relais-femmes. All CRI-VIFF research activities are conceived and conducted in close collaboration between researchers and practitioners.

After de round-table, Queen Silvia was invited to lunch by Minister Carole Théberge, Quebec Departement de la Famille, des Aînés et de la Condition féminine, along with some lecturers present at the International Conference.
