Novelas, Narratives and Critical Media Analyses as Research Methodologies: Understanding Experiences of Violence in the Lives of Young Women and Girls in Canada
Romy Poletti, London Centre for Research on Violence against Women and Children, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario
What does it mean to be a young woman in Canada today? How does violence play a role in her life? How is she able to tell her narrative and her experiences?
This paper will examine the ways in which innovative research methodologies such as critical media analyses, photo novelas and youth research assistants serve as interesting and exciting ways for young women and girls to participate in telling their own stories. The talk will focus on Romy Poletti’s experiences as a young feminist researcher, as well as her participation in a transnational Canadian study on violence in the lives of girls.
